9 Mistakes To Avoid When Choosing A Wedding Photographer

5.24.24

Wedding photos are a treasure that brides and grooms keep close to help them remember their union for the rest of their lives. When looking to hire a wedding photographer, it may get overwhelming to find someone that best fits your needs for an affordable price. It also may be your first time hiring a photographer and you may be unsure of what to expect. There’s a lot that comes into play during the selection process. Here are some of the big mistakes you should avoid when choosing a wedding photographer.

9 Mistakes To Avoid When Choosing A Wedding Photographer

Big Mistake #1: Hiring a family member!

The beauty of digital pictures is that so many people can take up the wonderful hobby of photography. Some of my friends and family take beautiful photos and some of them are amazing, but it doesn’t mean they know how to do wedding photography.

Many well-meaning friends and family offer to photograph the wedding for free which can be very attractive. This is all good until after the wedding when you learn that they don’t know how to shoot in a dark venue without dark blurry photos. Or don’t know how to make sure you’re not washed out in bright lighting. Even worse, they may not have a proper backup system and lose your precious wedding day photos that preserve the memory of one of the best days of your life. Hire a professional wedding photographer. You won’t regret it!

Big Mistake #2: Hiring based on the type of equipment a photographer has

Be careful of the photographer who spends a lot of time talking about the camera equipment they shoot with. Photographers love talking about their gear, heck it’s one of my favorite topics, but the job of the photographer is to show you amazing images in their wedding galleries. It’s not to strictly talk to you about the equipment they own.

Big Mistake #3: Not paying attention to the photographer’s style

Make sure you can see a consistent style throughout the photographer’s portfolio. This is crucial when choosing a photographer for your big day. There are different styles such as dramatic, candid, posed, and photo-journalistic.

If their style is all over the place, you won’t know what style you will end up with on your special day. Of course, make sure you love the wedding photographer’s style so you know what to expect when you see your pictures.

Big Mistake #4: Loving the photographer’s style, but asking for a different style

Requesting a photographer to adopt a completely different style can hinder the outcome of your photos. Each photographer has their own artistic vision and unique approach to capturing moments. Instead of asking for a different photography style, trust in their expertise and allow them to capture your day authentically. Discuss your preferences and vision with the photographer so they can tailor their approach to suit your specific needs while still maintaining their signature style.

Big Mistake #5: Skimping on time

Skimping on time can restrict your photographer’s ability to capture all the important moments and produce high-quality images. Plan your timeline wisely, allowing for ample time between events and locations, and considering any potential delays.

By setting aside enough time, you give your photographer the opportunity to document the day comprehensively and ensure no special moments are missed. Listen to your photographer if they are saying you need to add more time.

Big Mistake #6: Not creating a list

Well-thought-out shot list acts as a guide for the photographer, making sure they don’t miss any essential shots. Include specific photos you desire, such as family portraits, details of the venue, and specific moments you want to be captured. Communicate your shot list with your photographer well in advance, allowing them ample time to plan and organize for the day.

However, it is important to note that if you show your photographer an inspirational picture, keep in mind that you will not get the same exact picture. Although the photographer will try their hardest to replicate the image for you, there are various factors that will make your image unique.

Big Mistake #7: Forgetting to tell your photographer you have a child

If you have a child who will play a significant role in your wedding, remember to inform your photographer beforehand. This way, they can make the necessary arrangements to capture special moments involving your child.

Please discuss any specific shots you would like with your child and share any details about their involvement in the ceremony or reception. By communicating this information, your photographer can adapt their approach to ensure the inclusion of your child in an authentic and meaningful way.

Big Mistake #8: Not reading reviews

Although you may like a photographer’s photos, reviews provide valuable insights into their professionalism, the quality of their work, and how they interacted with previous couples. Take the time to research and read reviews on reputable platforms or wedding directories. Look for photographers who consistently receive positive feedback, as this indicates their ability to deliver outstanding service and stunning photographs.

Big Mistake #9: NOT SIGNING A CONTRACT!

This is to protect you!

A contract outlines the agreed-upon terms, services, deliverables, and any additional details discussed. It serves as a legally binding agreement that formalizes the working relationship between you and your photographer. Before proceeding with any bookings or payments, make sure you thoroughly read and understand the terms of the contract.

If the photographer does not have a contract, run for the hills. Seriously, I’m not kidding about this. If there is any tip for finding a great photographer to follow, let it be this one.
