How to Get a Marriage License

9.15.21

Congratulations!! You and your partner are now engaged. Once you complete most of the wedding planning, there are some important details that need to be taken care of. One of the most important things to do is to make sure that you are actually legally married! Check out our tips on how to get a marriage license in Kansas!

How to Get a Marriage License

1. District Court Clerk’s Office

Find your local district court clerk’s office to apply for a marriage license. Different counties may have different requirements. As a result, it is best if you ask the district court clerk’s office any questions you might have.

Some counties require that both people be present to obtain a marriage license. Others only require just one person to be there. However, they will need to know all of the information of their future spouse to fully complete the application. A state-issued ID is required to apply, as well. In fact, you will also need to know social security numbers, the full birth names of each parent, as well as where they were born.

Has either person has been married before? If so, the exact date of the final divorce decree or the date of the death must be included in the paperwork.

2. Cost

The average cost to obtain a marriage license is $85. However, fees can vary from county to county. Cash and exact charge are required and are typically paid when the license is picked up.

3. Retrieval

Marriage licenses can be picked up three days after applying at the district court clerk’s office. This is typically when the fee is paid for the marriage license. Applying for the marriage license can be done ahead of time. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about it. In fact, the marriage license is valid for 6 months.

4. The Big Day

The officiant typically fills out the marriage license. However, two witnesses are required to sign it as well. Either you, the officiant or a designated person, can mail it in or drop it off at the district court clerk’s office. Lastly, a certified copy must be ordered, as these are not automatically sent out.
