How to Change Your Last Name

7.27.21

  1. Congratulations! You got married! Now that you’ve completed this HUGE feat, there is still something left to do! If you decided to change your last name, it can seem quite overwhelming trying to figure out where to even start. Let us help you! Check out our steps for how to change your last name!

How to Change Your Last Name?

1. Marriage License

The first step is to make sure you have your marriage license. Some officiants may mail in the documents necessary to acquire your marriage license, but you may need to do this yourself! You will also need at least one or two certified copies to use for changing your last name.

2. Social Security Card

The next step is to acquire your NEW social security card. You will need a handful of items.

  • Certified copy of your marriage license
  • Proof of citizenship
  • Proof of identity
  • Current social security card

3. Driver’s License

Now, you are able to get your new driver’s license! For this, you will need to wait at least 24 hours after you have been to the social security office for your information to update. You will also need a certified copy of your marriage license, current driver’s license, proof of address, and payment for your new driver’s license.

4. Travel Documents

Passport changes must be done by mail only. For this, you will need a DS-82 form – https://pptform.state.gov/, a certified copy of your marriage license, current passport, payment by check, and a new 2×2 color photo of yourself.

5. Bank Accounts & Credit Cards

The next item is to change your last name on your bank accounts. For this, you will need a certified copy of your marriage license, new social security card, and your new driver’s license.

6. Your Employer

Now that you have your new driver’s license and have updated your bank account, be sure to send this information to your HR department to update payroll and all other necessary documents required by your employer.

7. Insurance

Update all forms of insurance – i.e. car, health, home, etc. All companies differ in processes but be prepared with your certified copy of your marriage license and your new driver’s license. They may request other forms of documentation as well, but you’ll already have those! 🙂

8. Bills

Update your new last name with your mortgage company, utilities, and all other services that you regularly pay for. Another helpful suggestion is to check your bank statements for any subscription services that you pay for regularly.
