Incorporating group dances into your wedding reception is not only a fun and energetic way to ignite the dance floor, but it also creates a sense of togetherness and unity among your guests. Whether you’re a fan of tradition or prefer a modern twist, group dances can truly be one of the highlights of your wedding reception. Below are some of our favorite group dances that you can incorporate into your reception.
The Wobble
It’s such a simple dance that has many similarities to the Electric Slide or Cha Cha Slide, but with a more modern, hip-hop/R&B flavor (well modern like a decade ago 😊). This dance is perfect for breaking the ice and encouraging guests to let loose and get those hips moving. The beauty of “The Wobble” lies in its versatility – it can be enjoyed by dancers of all skill levels and age groups. TikTok brought new life to The Wobble so I anticipate seeing people Jumping Forward, Jumping Back, and Backing it up for another decade.
Cupid Shuffle
The Cupid Shuffle was compared to The Cha Cha Slide because of their similar movements but they are 2 totally different songs, in every way. Inspired by the popular line dance culture in the South, musical artist Cupid wanted to create a dance that would bring people together and make them move their feet to the infectious beat of his music.
The “Cupid Shuffle” is a high-energy dance that gets everybody moving and grooving together, regardless of age or dancing ability. One of the great things about this dance is that it’s easy to learn — even if you’ve never done it before. The song itself provides the instructions, so everyone can follow along together. Plus, the upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics make it an instant mood booster.
Cha Cha Slide
While the Cha Cha Slide may seem ubiquitous to those who grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s, this party hit has only been around since August 2000, when it was released as a single by American artist DJ Casper. Producers of the track initially marketed it for use at aerobic sessions and nightclubs, but it quickly took the entire entertainment and event industry by storm. You can now hear the Cha Cha Slide at school dances, proms, birthday parties, ice-skating and roller rinks, bar/bat mitzvahs, quinceaneras, weddings, and sporting events all around the world.
Like its spiritual successor The Cupid Shuffle, the Cha Cha Slide’s lyrics cue party guests to perform each dance step, like the titular “slide” to the left or right or—of course— “cha cha real smooth.” This makes this dance perfect for all guests, as they don’t need to know the steps before joining in.
Jump On It
Long before Will Smith went viral for his hand movements, he was caught up in an entanglement with Carlton on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. On season 6, episode 8 of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air entitled ” Viva Lost Wages”. Will “The Thrill” and “Boogaloo Shrimp” take the stage for one of the most iconic moments in TV history.
The combination of infectious music and synchronized steps will have your guests jumping, twisting, and grooving in unison. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the show or simply looking to add a touch of nostalgia to your wedding reception, “Jump On It” is a fantastic choice to get the party started and create an electric atmosphere
Y.M.C.A.
In the 60s and 70s, the YMCA was known as a safe space for young men of color and youth ousted from their homes for their sexual orientation, which inspired Victor Willis, lead singer and lyricist of The Village People, to pen the song. Nowadays the YMCA is one of the most loved wedding reception songs of all time. There’s nothing like seeing everybody spell out the letters to the YMCA with their arms to this song. You don’t have to be on the dance floor. If you’re shy, you can “chair dance” the YMCA.
The song remains popular at events around the world, with crowds joining in on the dance. Like the Macarena, this dance’s reliance on arm movements makes it a great choice for groups with mixed activity or mobility levels.
Although you may feel like you’ve done one-too-many “slides to the left,” consider having some of these group dances incorporated into your reception. Not all guests may be familiar with your music variety or may get a little shy dancing to those songs. Having some popular group dances is an easy way to make everyone get on the dance floor and feel equally involved during your wedding reception.
