For those of us in the United States of America, and with no consideration of whether your political views were liberal or conservative or your spiritual views were agnostic or God-fearing, in March of 2020, life as you knew it came to a screeching halt due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Little did any of us the know-how and to what degree our lives would be affected … little did any of us fully understand the changes that COVID-19 would require of us in our daily lives, the way we celebrate, and the hard decisions we would be required to make in the effort to protect ourselves and our loved ones from potentially being infected with the COVID-19 virus.
My friends’ Wedding was canceled due to coronavirus. They’re having a small ceremony next month with only close friends and family. Do I still send a wedding gift?
The wedding and special events industry was immediately impacted by the stay-at-home orders that many municipalities announced and with the elimination of gatherings of more than 10 people.
At Complete Weddings + Events, our phones and email inboxes were flooded with postponement requests as the couple scrambled to adjust to these announcements and new limitations. We immediately responded with grace and understanding, rescheduling dates with much understanding and flexibility and at great ‘business’ cost following the ‘treat others the way you want to be treated’ golden rule.
While the majority of our weddings and events that were directly impacted by COVID-19 were postponed/rescheduled, we did receive several cancellation notices, as couples opted to cancel their large wedding celebration, and instead have a small ceremony with only close family and friends in attendance.
Maybe you were invited to a wedding and due to COVID-19 the couple decided to cancel and have a small ceremony with only family and close friends, and you were not on that final invite list. Do you still send a wedding gift? YES … of course, you do!
Proper etiquette aside and putting yourself in the shoes of the bride and groom who have been preparing, planning and dedicating months of time and resources to their wedding celebration, only to have something fully out of their control ‘COVID-19’ moved their celebration to CANCELLED, the encouragement and mercy they will experience in receiving your wedding gift as they start their new life together will be received with thankfulness and gratitude. I’d go as far as to say that your gift and hopefully encouraging note to the couple will be cherished and remembered longer by the couple during this un-presented time of uncertainty.
