Top '90s/'00s Songs For The Reception!

Top ’90s/’00s Songs For The Reception!

2.15.22

Nothing beats a great wedding reception with tons of 90’s and 2000’s songs! After all, music hasn’t really been the same since right? After all these years nothing beats moving to Yeah! by Usher near the end of a wedding reception to celebrate the day. There are so many great songs coming from these decades. So, how do you narrow down to ensure your wedding reception goes off great without whiffing on songs no one is into? We’ll cover some of the best songs from this music era in this blog!

Wedding Reception Songs from the ’90s and ’00s

We wanted to break down songs by category down below. Certain songs might work for your first dance or add some slow dancing to the wedding while others might be best to wait until later in the night to play. There are so many options and genres coming from these two decades! Here are our favorites for weddings:

Slow Jams

The ’90s and ’00s were arguably the golden eras of slow jams! Everything from Mary J Blige to Boys II Men hit. You can’t go over the top with slow jams and should use them sparingly as they’re great for slowing things down for a moment but shouldn’t set the tone for the entire wedding. However, when you do throw one out here or there they hit extremely well! Here are some of the best hits from these decades:

  • Everything by Mary J Blige
  • Before I Let You Go by Blackstreet
  • One Sweet Day by Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey
  • A Song for Mama by Boyz II Men (the ultimate mother/son dance song)
  • If I Ever Fall in Love by Shai

90’s Pop!

The ’90s were extremely popular for ushering in a style of pop music unlike anything heard or experienced before. Boy Bands, Brittany Spears, Spice Girls, TLC, and on and on dominated the sound waves and we rocked out to all of it! This style of pop was more than just fun it was unique and everyone had their own sound and style. Here are the songs from this genre we love the most at weddings:

  • Wannabe by Spice Girls
  • I Want it That Way by Backstreet Boys
  • Waterfalls by TLC
  • Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) by Backstreet Boys
  • Say My Name by Destiny’s Child
  • Bye Bye Bye by N’Sync

Pop-punk Wedding Songs

The mid-2000s were absolutely dominated by the pop-punk genre. It was an amazing combination of punk rock that began in the ’90s but with a bit more of an upbeat feel so that you could groove to it a little! Bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Green Day, and Fall Out Boy killed it in this space and their songs are still stuck in our heads to this day. However, playing this genre at a wedding is a bit like playing with fire.

These songs can absolutely pack the dance floor and provide a welcome change of pace but overplaying this genre or playing the wrong songs that guests aren’t familiar with can also clear the dance floor out altogether. To be safe, we like to stick to some of these songs and play them here and there throughout the night:

  • Sugar, We’re Going Down by Fall Out Boy
  • Face Down by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
  • I’m Just a Kid by Simple Plan
  • Mr. Brightside by The Killer

2000’s Pop Wedding Songs

The 2000’s takes what the ’90s did with pop and added a bit of hip/hop to it to make the music just a bit more fun! Of course, the ’90s have that classic feel to every pop song but the 2000s get you up and dancing naturally a bit better than in the ’90s. Think of it this way, the ’90s will get everyone to sing along but the 2000s will get your guests up and moving pretty quickly. Here are our top 2000’s pop songs:

  • SexyBack by Justin Timberlake
  • I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas
  • Crazy in Love by Beyonce and Jay-Z
  • Crazy by Gnarls Barkley

Hip/Hop

Now on to our favorite genre of the 90’s and 2000s, hip/hop! These songs go great later in the night and hit like hip/hop and rap never has before. These decades felt like this genre’s revolution when it really found its voice and it simultaneously gave us some of the absolute best dance songs of all time! Here are our absolute favorites in this area:

  • Get Low by Lil Jon & East Side Boys feat. Ying Yang Twins
  • Gold Digger by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx
  • Hey Ya! by Outkast
  • In Da Club by 50 Cent
  • Hot in Herre by Nelly
  • Crank That by Soulja Boy
  • Yeah! by Usher
