Priority Shot List: What Moments to Capture and Which to Ditch
A wedding shot list can be a helpful guide or a tyrannical checklist. The key is in the first word: Priority. This is not an encyclopedia of every possible combination; it’s the short, sacred script of the moments you cannot imagine your album without.
As your wedding photographer, we don’t just want a list; we want insight. Here’s how to write a priority shot list that empowers us to capture your story deeply, instead of confining us to a checklist.
The Two-List System: Your Blueprint for Success
Simplify the process by creating two distinct lists: List A (The Non-Negotiables) and List B (The “If There’s Time” Dreams). This approach ensures your essential memories are guaranteed, while keeping the day fluid and creative.
List A: The Non-Negotiables (10-15 Items Max)
This list is for irreplaceable people and genuine moments, not Pinterest poses.
Family Formals:
Be specific, but keep it minimal. Think: “Bride with immediate family (parents, siblings),” “Groom with immediate family,” “Combined immediate families.” Pro Tip: Provide a list of names to your wedding coordinator from Complete Weddings + Events to help wrangle family efficiently.
The Core Wedding Party:
One shot of you with your party, one of your partner with theirs, one combined. This covers the essential bonds.
The VIP Moments:
Think of the emotional landmarks: the first look, the veil adjustment with your mom, your partner’s reaction during the vows, a quiet moment with your grandfather.
List B: The “If There’s Time” Shots
This is for creative or specific ideas that are wonderful but not critical. A shot with your dog in his bow tie. A panoramic shot of all guests from the balcony. The rings placed on an heirloom item, like your grandmother’s hymn book.
What NOT to Put on Any Wedding Priority Shot List:
Generic Pinterest Poses:
(e.g., “bride looking over shoulder”). Trust your professional wedding photographer to create beautiful, authentic art in the moment.
An Exhaustive Roll Call:
Your gene pool has a million combinations (Aunt Sue with Cousin Bob…); do we need to capture every individual gene strand or are you happy to get the family in group snapshots? Your List A gives us the blueprint; an experienced photographer and coordinator can build out logical extensions if time allows, without turning portrait hour into a rigid lineup.
The Delivery: Context is King
Don’t just email a cold bulleted list. Schedule a brief chat or include a short note. Explain why something is non-negotiable. For example: “This is with my grandfather; he’s not well, and this might be our last professional photo with him.” This emotional context turns a line item into a mission for your photographer.
How Our Madison Photography Packages Fit Your Shot List
Your shot list also helps you pick the right coverage. All three of our Madison packages include 8 hours with a professional photographer, an online gallery for downloads and prints, and a signature release of all images.
Signature includes up to 800 edited images. Signature Plus adds a 1-hour engagement session, which is a good time to talk through your List A in person. Premium raises the count to 1,200 images, adds a 2-hour engagement session, and brings a second photographer for 5 hours, so family formals and candid guest shots can happen at the same time. Compare Madison photography packages.
Your Priority Shot List is a Collaboration Tool
A priority shot list is a map of your heart’s destinations, not a micromanagement manual. It allows your photographer from Complete Weddings + Events to expertly navigate the day, capturing the thousand beautiful, unscripted moments in between your listed landmarks.
