How would you describe your “DJ Personality” or “DJ Style”?

My style is similar to a juicy red onion. The outer layer is laid-back and chill, like sipping a margarita at the beach on a cool summer evening. I’ll throw on a country slow dance, or maybe some Motown, making sure that everyone is relaxed and enjoying themselves.

A layer comes off, and the onion is starting to get a little spicier. Now a little 1970’s disco is playing, and maybe some 80’s hair metal. I’m doing some ad-libs on the mic to get the crowd into it. We’re throwing on the cha-cha slide.

Boom, there goes another layer; I’m hitting the air-horn sample while the Mr. Brightside intro drops. Another layer; Fireball by Pitbull is in full swing with the dance lights strobing to the beat. Finally, it’s the end of the night, and all of the guests have formed a most pit around the bride & groom, who are doing karaoke to Trap Queen.

Basically, I will modulate the energy depending on what the event and/or client calls for. That being said, I have a preference for more energetic, hyped-up events. Nothing is as inspiring and motivating to me as watching people go nuts to the music I’m playing.

What is your favorite DJ memory?

I have a couple of memories that stand out…the first is witnessing a groomsman doing karaoke to the entirety of Just a Friend by Biz Markie. He did not miss a single word, a truly impeccable feat.

The second was watching 100-ish guests at a wedding drop to the floor and start rolling around when I put on Proud Mary by CCR. They took “rolling on the river” seriously!

What is your favorite thing about being a DJ?

Being a DJ allows me to help people take off their masks, be themselves, and just have a great all-around time. That could be through a meaningful slow dance with their partner, or it could be through a massive dance floor party where the whole crowd is jumping. For me, being able to give people this feeling is what it’s all about.

What are your specialties as a DJ?

I love to embrace the creative side of DJing, particularly by utilizing samples (i.e. airhorn, laughtrack, etc) and by creating mash-ups during song transitions. Let’s say the best man just dropped a searing joke on the groom during his toast, and I hit the airhorn to give it that extra zest.  Another example: a bride told me she loved Tom Petty, so I mixed in the vocals of Won’t Back Down while the Cha-Cha Slide was playing. She cracked up!

I’m also very detail-oriented and I spend the right amount of time preparing for my events. I will double and triple-check microphones, make sure I have all of my songs ready to go, and write down what announcements I need to make. These things are a tremendous help in making sure everything goes smoothly.

What is your favorite part of the night?

My favorite part of the night is open dance. It’s the part of the night where I can be the most creative, and other people can let loose.

What is your favorite party song?

It’s extremely tough to choose just one song, but in my opinion, nothing brings the heat quite like early 2010’s EDM. I’ll go with Levels by Avicii, with Everytime We Touch by Cascada as a close second.

List one fun fact about you most people do not know:

I speak Spanish semi-fluently! He estado a México muchas veces, y me encanta la música del mundo latino, desde Natalia Lafourcade a Bad Bunny.
