Canterbury Stables combines a long history in Wilmington with a fresh, elevated space for weddings and events. The 12-acre property originally opened in 1969 under world-renowned horse trainer Linda Shelhart. Today, the equestrian history remains an important part of the property. The newer event space feels polished while still embracing the property’s natural surroundings. It includes 2,400 square feet of indoor space, plus a covered patio. Couples can choose between two outdoor ceremony locations. We especially love the flexibility Canterbury Stables offers couples. The Ferns at Oak + Fennel Farms
Capacity: Up to 175-190 Guests
The Ferns at Oak + Fennel Farms feels like a little escape without leaving the Wilmington area. Located in Castle Hayne, the venue sits on a family-run, 16-acre farm. The Ferns occupies 1.5 acres of the property. The space has an elevated countryside feel that almost feels like you traveled overseas. High ceilings keep the indoor space open while thoughtful details add warmth. One of our favorite features is the bar area. Beautiful built-in indoor and outdoor bars make transitioning between spaces easy for guests. The venue includes a 3,200-square-foot banquet hall and a 1,600-square-foot covered patio. We also love that weddings are not the property’s only focus. Oak + Fennel Farms welcomes other celebrations and special events throughout the year.

The Barn at Five Star Stables
Capacity: Up to 160 guests
The Barn at Five Star Stables is another great option for couples wanting a relaxed farm setting. The property has an equestrian history, with the barn originally used to board horses. It was later thoughtfully transformed into the wedding venue couples see today. The surrounding pasture was also leveled to create more usable event space. This gives couples additional room, including space for a large tent if needed.
One of the biggest perks here is how much comes with your venue rental. Rentals include chairs, round tables, multiple ceremony locations, a bridal suite, and a dedicated bar area. Couples also get covered porches, parking and portrait session access. The barn seats up to 136 guests indoors. The porch can accommodate another 32 guests for additional seating. It is a practical option for couples who want plenty included with room to personalize their celebration.
