Ryan’s Tulsa Proposal Story • Complete Owner

1.15.21

I’m not one to share my story with people. I believe the hero of our story is always our clients and that I’m more of the behind the scenes person. However, after some encouragement and advice from some of my fellow peers, I think it may be important to share with you my Tulsa proposal story and how I proposed to my fiance, Heather over the holidays. At the very least you can share this with your significant others who need to pop the question already!

Ryan’s Tulsa Proposal Story

The Original Plan

My best friend Aaron and I had a plot to get Heather, my girlfriend at the time, to Chicago to take some engagement photos for him and his fiancé.  I’ve always loved that city and being a more private person, I wanted to make sure that the only two people I knew for miles were my close two friends and Heather’s 10-year-old son, Finn. It would also totally catch her off guard proposing at the end of their engagement session. But life has been very strange lately, and of course, we had to deviate away from traveling far due to COVID. So after consulting with Aaron, his fiancé, and Heather we decided to cancel our trip so I was back to square one of planning again.

Getting Permission

Call me old-fashioned, but this piece was very important to me. While Heather was working one afternoon, I decided to let Finn in on the secret I’d been keeping. I showed him the ring and told him it was Heather’s Christmas gift. Anytime he gets excited, you can see this big goofy grin stretch across his face. I asked him if it was alright if I can marry his mom. His approval mattered and of course, he gave the okay. Afterward, he immediately made us get up and drive to his Nana’s (Heather’s mom) to ask her parents too. After some tears and happy laughs, we were ready to go. I just needed to make sure Finn kept his secret until the big moment.

The Big Ask

After having to scramble when we decided to cancel our Chicago trip, I decided to reach out to Amber Snead, a great friend of Heather’s and a photographer. She was crucial in helping me make the right call on timing. I wanted to try to make everything happen at midnight, but the rain had other plans, so I opted for earlier. I told Heather that we needed to go pick up a late Christmas gift from a friend downtown.

We decided to run and grab a coffee at one of her favorite coffee shops before heading over to the Center of the Universe. Finn took the ring and we marched onward and believe me, I was incredibly nervous. The few moments leading up to it I felt this calm feeling like this is exactly how this was supposed to happen. When we arrived at the spot I told Heather to wait and shared part of my secret. “Sorry, there is no Christmas gift,” I explained. I got down on one knee and asked Finn if it was still okay. He shook his head yes and handed me the ring. Next thing I know Heather is already saying yes!

My Thoughts

All in all everything was an amazing success. Like any great plan, I wouldn’t stress on the intricate details. My natural laidback self kept me sane and simply accepting this raw moment was all that needed to happen. The most important thing is that I know what makes the love of my life happy. So when you decide to pop the big question, keep that person at the center of your heart and focus. Everything will come perfectly together in the end.
