Hooray! You are in one of the most beautiful, history-rich, and fun areas of the state! Even if you are only here for a few days, you can do so much while being a part of a Northern Virginia wedding. Here are some highlights.
Things to Know
You may hear the term “DMV”. That stands for The District (of Columbia), Maryland, and Virginia. Geographically, it really is a metro area. Which brings up an important feature about transportation. Known for some unique traffic, while the major tourist features are “close”
Things to Know-Getting Around
You may hear the term “DMV”. That stands for The District (of Columbia), Maryland, and Virginia. Geographically, it really is a metro area. This brings up an important feature about transportation. Known for some unique traffic, while the major tourist features are “close”, many visitors and residents alike find that taking the Metro Rail is convenient and easy, especially if visiting the nation’s capital. The metro rail has been extended as well, so it is much easier to travel further into Virginia.
NOVA is More Than Just the Busy Metropolis You Might Envision
I’ve lived in 3 different areas of Northern Virginia- Alexandria, Falls Church, and Ashburn. All three offer different vibes and ways of life. If you are in town for a wedding, there are so many great things to do.
History lovers
- Falls Church (as well as Arlington and DC) is home to one of the original boundary stones put in place by Benjamin Banneker in 1792. You could plan a trip and see all three while also enjoying the local scenes.
- Arlington of course is the site of Arlington National Cemetery, easily reached by Metro.
- Old Town Alexandria is a must visit. Historical homes line the street as well as shops and restaurants as you make your way to the waterfront. In Old Town, you are not far from the Mason Memorial, which is worth a visit to go up to the Observation Deck, which provides stunning views of the city for miles.
- Loudoun County has the best of both worlds (data centers notwithstanding). Check out downtown Leesburg for a walkable adventure. Parks and hiking trails abound. You can see the mountains from almost anywhere in the county, and better yet, reach them!
Places You Don’t Want to Miss
- Alexandria- Visit Port City Brewing for an upbeat experience and some outstanding beer!
- Falls Church-For wine and beer lovers: Visit Audacious Ale Works or Dominion Wine and Beer. For coffee and wine, visit Northside Social. Lunch and dessert? You’d want to go to Godfrey’s.
- Loudoun (Leesburg, Purcellville, Sterling, Ashburn, and surrounding areas)- For an absolutely breathtaking view plus wine, beer, or cider, visit Bluemont Vineyards. You’ll forget you’re in Northern Virginia! You will need a reservation, but they do a good job of trying to find seating if you don’t. The family owned winery, craft brewery, cidery, and the Great Country Farm experience are all situated in the same general area on Foggy Bottom Road. Also, great wedding venues that have it all (food, beverages, activities) include:
- Clyde’s Willow Creek Farm (gorgeous, great food, and an actual garden)
- Fleetwood Farm Winery (so tasteful and inviting!)
- Williams Gap Vineyards (one of the most beautiful tasting rooms/facility)
- The Barns at Hamilton Station (Rustic, quaint, and fun!)
- Vanish Brewery (expansive property, dog friendly, and tons of options for food and beverage
Many of these locations may require reservations. Check ahead of time.

I could go on and on about the amazing locations in Northern Virginia, especially in my town! And if you’re interested in having someone else do the driving, Reston Limousine is very accommodating, with lots of options for you or your group. Enjoy your visit to Northern Virginia. The event may be memorable, but your time here should also bring a smile to your face and an urge to visit again!
