Should the Groom Wear a Suit or Tuxedo?

How do you decide on the attire your groom should wear on the big day?  This is one decision that sets the standard for black-tie, white- tie, formal, or semi-formal affair.  It’s also good to consider where your wedding will be located.  In the Charleston area we have a large mix of venues from our beautiful beaches, historic downtown, sweeping plantations to boho/vintage farm settings and many more!  But what if you don’t really have a preference?  We’ve got you covered and will provide a simple guide on deciding if the groom should wear a suit or tuxedo in the following blog.

Suit or Tuxedo, What’s the Difference?

Suits and tuxedos are not created equal.  The biggest difference?  Satin, which is seen on the detailing of a tuxedo.  These details stand out on the buttons, lapel and side-stripe of the trousers.  When accessorizing a tuxedo you can include a waistcoat, cummerbund and bow tie.  That said, these accessories aren’t absolutely necessary for a tux.  It seems like Suits generally have one type of fabric making them slightly less formal.  Navy blue suits have been popular for many years now but experts agree this shade is not going away anytime soon.  It is a refreshing change from traditional black menswear and can be used with many different creative colors and accessories.

Formality Check

A tuxedo is a must for your groom for a black-tie affair.  This is a perfect way to set the tone for your formal event.  If you list black-tie as your wedding dress code, you’ll likely have a several guests arrive wearing tuxedos.  Keep that in mind when planning the groom’s attire so he will be the most formally dressed person at the wedding.  Another thought to consider is the venue, for example, a historic downtown Charleston location like The Francis Marion Hotel carries a black-tie affair perfectly.

Time of Day

Typically, it’s customary that your groom would wear a tuxedo for evening events.  If you’re planning to marry during the day we recommend a suit for your groom’s attire.  Additionally, it can get fairly warm most days in the Charleston area.  Casual, intimate daytime weddings where your groom is wearing a breezy white shirt and khakis would be perfect on the beach!

The Price Factor

Cost can be an important deciding factor.  We recommend being thoughtful when it comes to how much your wedding party will be spending to make it to your big day. Men are more likely to get additional use out of a suit than out of a tuxedo.  That said, it is possible to rent a nice tuxedo and it’s often a more affordable option than purchasing a new suit.

Express Yourself

Your personal preference is important to your big day and can be fun to integrate your groom’s ideas.  If he’s more excited to dress up in a tuxedo, let him have fun with it!  If you find he really enjoys accessorizing, a suit might just be a good fit.  Use the time and style of your wedding to guide you in making the best decision.
