Line dancing YAY or NAY

2.27.19

Dancing is an essential and, arguably, the most fun part of your wedding reception. If you have ever been to a wedding, you probably have participated in line dancing, when everyone seems to know the moves and performs a big group dance together. It was all fun and games, but now you are facing a tough choice: should you play those famous tunes at your wedding?

The answer is not as obvious as one might think. Although these songs are upbeat and everyone knows all the words to them; you may also feel like they are a bit worn out.

Here is our two cents on the topic:

Break the Ice

Songs like Y.M.C.A., Cha-Cha Slide, and Cupid Shuffle are great ice-breakers. We all either know the moves to these or can learn them in a snap. Familiar tunes bring a lot of people to the dance floor and kids have a riot with them.

How many are too many?

It’s easy to fall into the tracks and keep asking for more of those catchy tunes. There are over a dozen popular line dance songs, so, at an average of four minutes, it may take almost an hour out of your party time. Our advice is to choose two to three line dance songs that you like and stick with those.

Should you do a “Chicken Dance”?

Remember that one from your pre-school days? It’s making a come-back and is being requested more and more at wedding receptions. Two things you should keep in mind: there is all of four moves to it and the song is LONG. So, it can get a little boring after the third minute of playing. If it’s a must have on your play list, ask your DJ to play a shorter version of it.

Bring the Oldies Back

Some of the line dances, like the Electric Slide, have been around since the 70s; which means, they can spark some memories in your 50 and 60-something guests. Want great-uncle Bob to break out the moves? Play one of those. Don’t worry if you are not familiar with the moves, most likely, your DJ can give you and your guests a dance lesson.

Opting Out

Someone mentions line dancing and the first thought that pops into your head is: “Not THAT again”. Don’t feel bad, you are not alone. Some brides and grooms prefer not to play any of the “crowd” songs at all and save all the time for the music they like. The only advice we have is to let your DJ know not to play line dance songs ahead of time.
