An Orlando Wedding During the Big Game

7.23.20

As of today, professional live sports are officially back on TV. Along with the baseball season kicking off today, the NBA returns next week and we may see football in just over a month! To many people, this is extremely exciting, but if you’re planning on having your wedding in the next few months you may be wondering how to battle large sporting events during your wedding. There are a few ways you can deal with the big game during your wedding day that we’ve laid out below:

Orlando Wedding During the Big Game

Option 1: Ban Sports at the Wedding

One way to deal with sports at your wedding is to ban them altogether. Put your foot down and let your friends and family know that the focus should be on the wedding and no sports should be allowed! This approach works well as far as setting expectations that the day should be centered around you. However, you do run the risk of some guests leaving quickly after dinner and fewer people sticking around for the dancing. Some guests will attempt to both make you happy as well as catch the game so you may see a few people ducking out a bit earlier.

Option 2: Lean into it

A second option would be to lean into the game and allow your guests to watch it off and on throughout the night, maybe even creating some excitement around it! This could be doing anything from scheduling your ceremony around the game to ensure you and your guests have plenty of time to watch the game to just having a TV on somewhere that has the game on as you get ready or are getting pictures taken. This approach will take a bit of attention off of yourself and place it on another event, however, this does ensure that everyone is happy at the end of the day and people will stick around a bit longer than if they weren’t allowed to watch. Plus, if you’re into the game yourself this lets you take a peek throughout the day as well!

Option 3: Ignore it All

Another approach would be to completely ignore the fact that there are any sporting events on the day of your wedding. Others might watch on their phones, there may be chatter about the game, but you’ve decided to completely ignore it all! In all honesty, this is in a lot of ways a pretty good choice altogether. For the most part, the game could be out of sight and out of mind. However, this may only be a realistic choice if you’re fine with a few people being distracted at times and you can honestly say it won’t bother you. Otherwise, it may be best to address to issue.

However, you deal with having a large sporting event fall on your wedding day depends entirely on how you feel about the game and how you feel about others watching it. You may be excited yourself and want to see as much as possible or you may be completely against the idea of sacrificing the attention from where it should be, on you! The great thing about your wedding day is that you’re entitled to do what you’d like because after all, it’s your wedding day and only you decide where the spotlight should be.
