Say “I Do” the Right Way: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a Marriage License in Northwest Arkansas

Say "I Do" the Right Way: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a Marriage License in Northwest Arkansas

Planning your wedding in Northwest Arkansas? One of the most important early steps is securing your marriage license. Here’s how to make the Northwest Arkansas marriage license process smooth and stress-free.

Know Where to Go: County Clerk’s Offices in NWA

You can apply for a marriage license at any County Clerk’s Office in Arkansas—residency isn’t required. In NWA, the primary locations include:

  • Benton County – Bentonville (Administration Building) or branches in Rogers and Siloam Springs; hours vary between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM
  • Washington County, Carroll County, Greene County, Faulkner County — Each county handles marriage license issuance. For example, Faulkner County (Conway) operates weekdays 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and accepts credit/debit (with fees) or cash

If you’re getting married in Bentonville or the broader NWA region, Benton County is often the most convenient.

Schedule Your Visit

Bring both applicants in person—in Arkansas, both spouses must be present during the application process. Offices are open Monday through Friday, during regular business hours, typically open from 8:00 AM–4:30 PM. Check online to confirm your location’s hours.  Appointments may not be required in every office, but can help reduce wait times. Call ahead if you’re unsure.

Gather Your Documents & Payment

What to bring:

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID: driver’s license, passport, or military ID (for ages 18+).
  • If you’re between 18–20 years old, some counties may also ask for a birth certificate.
  • If your ID shows a name from a previous marriage, bring a certified divorce decree to show your current name.
  • $60 fee, payable in cash or with credit/debit (some counties charge processing fees).
  • Social Security Number, if required (not universally, but asked in some counties).

Tie the Knot (Legally!)

Choose a valid officiant: a justice of the peace or ordained minister whose credentials are registered with the county clerk where the license was issued. On the wedding day, the officiant completes and signs the license, but witnesses are not required.

Return & Record the License

You—or sometimes the officiant—must return the completed license to the same County Clerk’s Office where it was issued within 60 days. Once recorded, you can request certified copies—often for a fee ($5–$6)—for updating your name on documents like your Social Security Card or driver’s license.

Quick Reference Table

  • Choose your county clerk’s office, Benton, Washington, and others around NWA as needed.
  • Visit together during business hours. Bring all required documents & payment.
  • Pay for and receive your marriage license with a $60 fee, valid for 60 days.
  • Have a ceremony with a valid officiant. No witnesses are required.
  • Return the license to record. Must be within a 60-day window
  • Request certified copies for legal name changes, etc.
