How to Create a Wedding Hashtag

9.13.21

The venue, Invites, Florals – Check, Check, Check! This next item on your wedding planning checklist can be completely cost-free! However, resources or extra brainpower can be helpful to check off a creative hashtag. You’re not alone if you’d fancy having hashtags guests can use at your wedding on social media! Wedding hashtags have become a staple for couples who want all to see the insta-worthy wedding through a clever hashtag!

Wedding Hashtag Help is Here!

The Purpose of the Wedding Hashtag

Hashtags are great for connecting all event content on social media. At your wedding, your guests can share photos and videos and all using the same hashtag. This makes it super easy to see all the posts from your big day! You can also use a hashtag in content leading up to your event. This can help keep all your wedding planning content connected to the big day. If you’re big on frequent content creation, maybe you have a hashtag for wedding prep, the bachelor or bachelorette party, AND the actual wedding day! If you and your guests, along with wedding vendors, want to see all the fun content from your memorable day shared on social, a hashtag is great to view it all easily from the various people posting about it!

What Not To Include in a Hashtag

Be sure to not include any spaces or punctuation since hashtags don’t read them. Everything included after won’t be included. Don’t use any symbols, like dollar signs, asterisks, exclamation points, commas, periods, and apostrophes. This also means you have to type out the word, and can’t use the “and” symbol: &. If you were to try to do #WeddingofSarah&Joseph, only the #WeddingofSarah would be picked up since hashtags end wherever you place punctuation. Stick to the pound symbol at the beginning only. Period.

Alliteration & Assonance

Find phrases or words that can create alliteration in your hashtag! Alliteration is when there are multiple words that start with the same consonant letter or that have the same sound, used in one statement. (When using repeating vowels, it’s called assonance!) You’ll see this often in titles or headlines, for example, “Man on the Moon”, “Magical Murray”, or “Horton Hears A Who!” If your names start with the same letter, like Jessica and Jacob  – awesome, you have a great start! Or perhaps your hometown or wedding location can make your alliteration like “Love in Lancaster” or “Match Made In Michigan”. Combining both alliteration and wordplay is a hashtag double play! #ItTakesTwotoThompson

Poll The Audience

When it comes to creating a clever wedding hashtag, the more brainpower, resources, and assistance, the better! Don’t be afraid to ask the wedding party, a Detroit wedding Facebook group, or online wedding forums for help. A bestie or stranger may be able to help you decide between a few options or bring an idea to light that hasn’t even crossed your mind yet.
