‘Tis the season to party!! And drink, and eat, and gain some weight, but it’s all in the spirit of the season! If you’ve been itching to throw a holiday party, we have all the starting points for you and how to have an unforgettable night!
Pick A Holiday!
The best way to start is by picking the holiday you’d like to celebrate. It can’t be a holiday party without a specific holiday in mind! Picking the holiday sets the tone for the following things to come like decorations, food, and venues. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
Pick A Venue
Speaking of venues, this is one of the most important parts of throwing a holiday party. Your venue really depends on how many people you plan on inviting. If you plan on having a small holiday party for your closest family and friends, having it at home is a perfect option for you. If you’re planning on having a bigger party, consider hosting the party at a local venue.
For example, with a New Year’s Eve party, a venue that’s located downtown would be perfect. Picking one in the heart of the city and where you can see fireworks from top floors would set the scene for a spectacular countdown. Our favorite downtown venues in Des Moines include:
- Bash Events & Catering | 1312 Locust St, Des Moines, IA: info@bashdsm.com
- Embassy Club | 666 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA: 515-244-CLUB
- Rollins Mansion | 2801 Fleur Dr, Des Moines, IA: 515-657-7288
Decorations
The idea of a holiday party really doesn’t come to life until all the decorations come together. The holidays are a time of celebration! So, depending on the holiday you choose, make sure you pick decorations that go with that idea. If you want to avoid going the cheesy route, try going with the feeling the holidays gives you. For example, instead of going the green and red route for Christmas, think of things Christmas reminds you of… winter to cozy to fluffy blankets, candle lit tables and fireplaces. Whatever you decide to do, make it a reflection of you!
The Menu
It’s safe to assume that the guests you invite will be expecting some food. Depending on the holiday, you can make food accordingly. When it comes to Christmas or Thanksgiving, full meals are usually expected as they are usually familial holidays. For NYE, people will be fine with cocktail-inspired food. Mix your holiday party up with some themed cocktails or dishes. For example, for NYE, go for something light like champagne, or spritzers. For Christmas, an eggnog-inspired cocktail will be perfect!
