Does Indoor-Outdoor Flexibility Matter for Columbus Weddings?

Does Indoor-Outdoor Flexibility Matter for Columbus Weddings?

It’s safe to say that out of the 51 states in our country, Ohio gets mocked more than just about any of them. Open Instagram and you’re likely to be flooded with memes, referencing our rivalry with Michigan or constant traffic jams. However, out of all the complaints I’ve heard about Ohio, its weather has to be the most common. While some states remain mostly warm or cool throughout the year, we unfortunately get the worst of both worlds. Rarely do we find ourselves in mild temperatures; it’s typically either blazing hot or freezing cold.

This is one of many reasons why having indoor-outdoor flexibility on your wedding day, particularly in Columbus, is so crucial. Having the ability to host your main events, capture photos and enjoy time with those you love both inside and outside allows for immense versatility. Speaking from experience, the greatest benefit of this is when…

#1. Weather Doesn’t Cooperate

If weather takes an unexpected turn, being able to walk from inside from a stunning patio or golf course and into a gorgeous venue hall is arguably one of the most important aspects to consider when choosing where to have your wedding. The sky over our heads can be unpredictable, especially in Ohio.

As a videographer, I can remember multiple times taking shelter with my couples and the photographer to avoid having equipment and makeup destroyed by rainfall. I also make sure to arrive with water protection, but even so, having the convenience of indoor-outdoor flexibility for Columbus weddings can easily pay for itself.

#2. Visual Variety in Your Photos and Video

Although there are many beautiful wedding venues in Columbus, not all of them are ideal for inside and outside use. Not only does weather make this problematic at times, but photography and videography can be affected, as well.

Let’s face it; most couples don’t want ALL of their photos taken with the same backdrop behind them and their guests. Having a few areas on-site to incorporate, both indoor and outdoor, creates variety in your images.

Back in 2022, I shot a wedding in Northern Ohio on a soggy winter day. The rain never stopped, which left the photographer and I no choice but to shoot everything with the couple inside their venue. This would work at some venues, but due to the smaller size and dim lighting of the one we were at, not a lot was able to be captured.

Scenarios like this can drastically affect the quality of your wedding photos and video, and are one of the main reasons why I always recommend couples to choose venues with indoor-outdoor flexibility for Columbus weddings.

Some of my all-time favorites are Swan Lake Event Center and Jorgensen Farms! Both have gorgeous interiors, and are ideal for exterior use with patio space and scenic nature, as well! I’ve shot at these venues numerous times, and have always been happy with how my couple’s images turn out.

#3. More Room For Your Guests

Smaller guest lists are becoming more popular in the wedding space, but having additional room to gather inside and outside is still a good thing nonetheless! I’ve shot weddings of all sizes, and have seen firsthand the truth behind this.

Not only are larger venues something that your guests will enjoy, but your caterers, as well. It can be difficult for venue staff to maneuver through tight places, and can make framing solid shots a challenge for photographers and videographers, as well.

Some photo and video teams, such as Complete Weddings & Events Columbus, are familiar with working in smaller venues, but choosing one with indoor-outdoor flexibility for Columbus weddings is still something I recommend.

With new wedding venues constantly opening in and around Columbus, choosing one for your wedding day can feel overwhelming. Each one has its own pros and cons, and can significantly affect how your wedding looks and feels.

I’ve had the privilege of shooting at countless venues in Ohio and neighboring states, but my favorites all share one thing in common; they offer event space inside and outside.

If you’re concerned about weather conditions, having different visual styles in your photos and video, or are looking for a venue with plenty of space to gather, then choosing one with indoor-outdoor flexibility is the way to go.
